Eric “Red” Schafer 2011 Grappling Report

February 1st, 2012

Written by Nathan Schafer

One year ago, Eric “Red” Schafer won the 2010 Grappler of the Year for Wisconsin going (19-1). Of those 19 wins in 2010, he managed to win 17 of them via submission using 10 different types of submissions for a finishing ratio of over 89%. In 2011, he managed to outdo his 2010 performances in all categories. Despite training for two MMA fights last year, Red was still able to compete in grappling 21 times going undefeated at (21-0) for the year. He managed to submit every opponent but one, increasing his finishing ratio to over 95% this year, a 6% increase over the previous year. In 2011, he submitted 20 opponents using 13 different submissions. In 2010 his most utilized move was the Von Flue Choke with which he won 3 matches, but in 2011 his most utilized submission was the triangle choke with 4 victories.

Red started out 2011 by competing at the King Grappler X in January. He defeated his first two opponents with a front choke and a heel hook. In the finals of the +175lb division he then faced Filipe Barbosa, a BJJ brown belt under Marcello Monteiro. He again utilized a front choke to defeat the Brazilian. The King of Kings is then determined by taking the winner of the +175lb division versus the winner of the -175lb divison. Red faced TapouT reality star and multiple Bellator tournament winner, Pat Curran of Curran Martial Arts in Illinois. Red was able to secure a rear naked choke to win the King of Kings and take home the $500 cash prize.

Less than a month later at Combat Corner Grappling Championships – Volume 6, Red returned to the mats to capture the +170lb absolute division, a field that consisted of 13 grapplers including UFC stars such as Anthony Pettis and Pat Barry. Joe Ruiz of Submit Sport was submitted with a leg scissors choke and Jim Fritz of SUDA in Illinois was tapped with a triangle choke. He also was able to defeat Matt Jukkala, an All Guard Combatives Tournament Champion and purple belt out of Guerilla/Alliance BJJ in Minnesota with a Von Flue Choke. Red Schafer Mixed Martial Arts grapplers, Dave Kleczkowski and Tony Senner rounded out the division finishing 2nd and 3rd place respectively. They split the $400 cash prize provided by the tournament sponsor, Concede Fightwear.

In March, the Red Schafer Mixed Martial Arts grappling team faced off in a dual meet against Kenosha’s Gracie Barra school. Red dressed as the comic book superhero, Spiderman and was able to submit Rob Carbajal with a triangle choke while the Red Schafer Mixed Martial Arts grappling team took home the team victory with a score of (59-6).

King Grappler XI took place in April in Madison. In the first round of the +175lb absolute division Red defeated John Peralta with a triangle choke. In the second round Red faced Raphael Barbosa, an LCCT BJJ black belt. The Brazilian utilized a conservative closed guard to take the match into deep water but after over 60 minutes Barbosa was submitted with a rear naked choke. In the finals of the 175+ division, Red faced off against Mario Roberto’s top student, Dan Leckel, a purple belt from Rochester, Minnesota, who was submitted with a straight armbar. The King of Kings is then determined by taking the winner of the +175lb division versus the winner of the -175lb divison. Red faced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, Joao “Mosquito” Bosco of LCCT. Red was able to secure a foot lock to win the King of Kings and take home the $500 cash prize.

The Waukesha Open 3 occurred in May of 2011. In the first of two cage grappling matches he submitted Rob Keller, a BJJ blue belt, with a Peruvian Necktie. He then defeated Justin Hutter, a brown belt from Waukesha MMA with a straight armbar before bowing out of the tournament. Tony Senner, Red’s wrestling coach went on to win the Waukesha Open absolute division.

In July of 2011 at the C3 “Patriot Games” in Gary, Indiana, Red competed again in the absolute division. He defeated Mitch Banic of Corral’s Martial Arts with a kimura and Quinton McCoffell of 11th Dimension with a triangle choke. In the finals, Red faced off a very tough Mark Vujovic. Vujovic is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt, multiple time NAGA champion, and instructor at Carlson Gracie BJJ in Chicago. Red won on points in the only match of the year that he was not able to secure a submission and took home the $400 cash prize.

In September, at a NCGA team dual meet, the Red Schafer Mixed Martial Arts grappling team faced off against the Waukesha MMA team and won with a team score of (33-28). Red squared off against Craig Caliendo and won with an armbar.

In the final King Grappler of the year in September, Red cruised to the victory in the +175lb Absolute Division defeating Badgerland grapplers with triangle choke and arm bar victories before facing his teammate Chris Senner with a guillotine choke in the finals of the King of Kings where Senner had won the -175lb Absolute Division.

2011 Quick Stats (21-0) undefeated grappling record 95% finishing ratio 20 submission victories with 13 types of submissions Competed in 8 events Won 6 different divisions and defeated 2 black belts, 3 brown belts, and 2 purple belts

Karl “Robocop” Turek vs. Will “The Franchise” Dicke

November 16th, 2011

By Nathan Schafer

Red Schafer Mixed Martial Arts fighter and grappler, Karl “Robocop” Turek returns to action this Friday, November 18th, at the Potawatomi Bingo and Casino Expo Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Turek, a professional fighter with an MMA record of (10-7) takes on Will “The Franchise” Dicke of the Combat Training Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin in a 205lb light-heavyweight clash.

Turek most recently fought and lost a razor-close split decision to Dallas O’Malley of the Chosen Few Fight Team in Madison, Wisconsin in April of this year. Since then he has been honing his skills and recently earned his blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Red Schafer on November 3rd.

His opponent, Will Dicke brings to the cage an MMA record of (10-5) and is riding an impressive 3-fight win streak that dates back to April of this year that included wins over Wisconsin fighters, Luis Ramirez, Adam VanderVeen, and Zach Browder in Combat USA. His other fight in 2011 included a unanimous decision loss to former Green Bay Packer, Herbert “Whisper” Goodman.

The Numbers

On paper this is a fairly even fight and both fighters are experienced veterans in the sport. Turek has 17 professional fights under his belt compared to Dicke’s 15 and they both have 10 wins. Dicke is a heavy-handed striker and 7 of his wins have come due to strikes with 1 submission. Turek, on the other hand, holds the edge in submissions with 6 and also has 2 technical knockout victories on his resume.

Turek, 36 years old, started his professional MMA career in 2007 while Dicke’s began in 2009. He is however, giving up 10 years in age to his 26-year old opponent. In their MMA careers, both fighters have bounced between the 185lb middleweight class and the 205lb light-heavyweight class and both fighters train at highly respected camps in Wisconsin.

Turek currently calls Red Schafer Mixed Martial Arts in Milwaukee his home and trains with fighters and sparring partners such as UFC veterans, Eric “Red” Schafer, Razak Al-Hassan, as well as Adam VanderVeen and the Rebel Alliance Fight Team. Dicke recently joined the Combat Training Center in Green Bay, which is now home to notable area fighters such as Ron Faircloth, Gerald Meerschaert, and James Warfield.

Below is a video interview with Karl that features training highlights in preparation for this fight.

My Middleweight Debut & Red Schafer MMA in the NCGA Team Semi-Finals

September 25th, 2011

MY 185 lb DEBUT AT XFO

On September 3rd, I returned to the MMA cage after a year and a half off. Once the new gym settled down, we scheduled a fight at the XFO 41-Outdoor War event in Island Lake, IL. This was also going to be my MMA debut at middleweight (185lbs). My opponent would be Chris Albandia, a fighter out of Midwest Training Center in Chicago, IL with an 8-6 record.

One of the challenges was cutting down to this new weight class. Through a lot of hard training and dieting, I slimmed down to 202 lbs for fight week. Using some weight-cutting tricks I was down to 194 lbs the morning of weigh-ins. Check out this video of the final 9 lb cut (made by my bro, Nate)!

I weighed in at 184.8 lbs officially. I ate and rehydrated to over 200 lbs by fight time. Here is a description of my fight according to MMA Recap

“Eric Schafer and Chris Albandia headlined the night of action. The fight marked the first fight for both fighters in fifteen months and the first fight for Schafer at middleweight. Albandia took the center of the cage and looked to keep Schafer on the outside with leg kicks. Schafer landed a right hand that seemed to hurt Albandia and followed it up with another combo that definitely rocked his opponent. Albandia then shot for a takedown and Schafer grabbed a guillotine. Albandia escaped and was patient working body punches. Schafer grabbed Albandia’s arm and then threw it outside of his leg to set up the triangle choke. After a quick adjustment, the choke was in tight and Albandia was forced to tap.”

Check out this video of the fight (also made by my brother, Nathan)…

I’d like to thank my coaches; Scott Sievewright (boxing), Tony Senner (wrestling), Adric Kennedy (kickboxing), and Karl Turek (life coach). I’d also like to thank all my teammates at Red Schafer MMA and the Rebel Alliance, and my family for all the support! Also thanks to my sponsor Suppress clothing out of Milwaukee, WI. Check out their websites for cool clothes http://www.suppressfightwear.com/  http://www.facebook.com/suppress.fightwear   http://twitter.com/Suppress_fight  Also thanks to my manager Brian at Suckerpunch Entertainment for setting this fight up.

RED SCHAFER MMA WINS THE NCGA TEAM SEMI-FINALS!!!

On September 10th, Red Schafer MMA took a team of 12 grapplers to battle the evil forces of Waukesha MMA. This would be the semi-finals of the Nation Cage Grappling Association 8 team Wisconsin tournament. We beat Gracie Barra in the first round, and WMMA beat Neutral Ground to advance to this semi-final clash.

Our lineup was-

125lb-Courtnie Korpela, 135lbs-Amanda Page, 145lbs-Chris Senner, 155lbs-Josh Hinsenkamp, 165lbs-Mike Litschauer, 175lbs-TJ Cavender, 185lbs-Chris Piper, 195lbs-Tony Senner, 205lbs Eric Red Schafer, 225lbs Dave Kleczkowski, 265lbs-Karl Turek, & 265+lbs Matt Czekay.

Win or lose, we all put up good battles. It was a VERY close score after all the dust settled. We WIN! The Red Army defeated Waukesha Mixed Martial Arts by a score of 33-28. A very tough 360 BJJ team won the other semi-final, so we have our work cut out for us, but we will be ready for the finals on October 29th!

Congrats to Donnie Vang-Smith on winning a Gold Medal in the AAU National Judo Championships in Milwaukee, WI on 8-13-11. Next up for Donnie is a teen kickboxing match at the WNCC  10 fight card in Fond du Lac on 8-27-11! If you are in the area, then definitely check out a good kickboxing show.

RAZAK AL-HASSAN PUTS ON A GREAT FIGHT VERSUS HOUSTON ALEXANDER

Razak flew to Albuquerque to fight UFC vet and all-around badass Houston Alexander on 8-13-11 for the main event on the MMA Fight Pit pay-per-view. Razak had a great back and forth striking battle for two rounds before an unknown accident dislocated his middle finger. Unable to make a fist or close his hand, Razak tried to have a doctor pull it back into position to continue, but the finger wouldn’t budge. Unfortunately Razak had to stop and lost via Doctor Stoppage. I was still proud of Razak’s effort. Too bad he didn’t have a chance to fight in the 3rd round to try and finish the fight. Razak is the man…

Til next time,

New Belts at Red Schafer MMA!

July 12th, 2011

We had our first ever BJJ belt test at the Red Schafer MMA training center since its December opening. We had 5 men trying out for their blue belts on May 28th, 2011. They all deserved their rank, but first they had to pass the torturous ordeal of my test. First thing we do is have an hour to go over the 68 moves on my blue belt test. They must show basic understanding of these moves and be able to explain the technical details. After that the fun begins…

After the technical part of the test, the recruits start a 30 minute conditioning session. This is mainly to see if they “want” it. They have to show determination and prove their loyalty to the art. The senior students get to join in and make up workouts for the recruits. It is all in good fun, and the whole objective is to not quit.

The final test involves a 30 minute BJJ sparring session. They are already exhausted, but they must continue to execute technical jiu-jitsu and, once again, not quit! If they pass all the tests, then they get their belts.

We had some pain, some vomiting, and a ton of fun. All 5 recruits passed with flying colors. Our 5 new blue belts are- Justin Campbell, Casey Herzig (from our UMA affiliate in Fond du Lac), Mohammad Khouj, Ray Matthews Jr., and James Priest. Check out this video of their ordeal…

We weren’t done yet… My #2 man, Ryan “the Beard” Williams was awarded his brown belt after many years of training. Ryan has been a great training partner, coach, and friend for a very long time. I am so proud of him, and cannot wait to see him develop into a black belt in the next few years!

I am so proud of the whole team! Our next belt promotion will be end of summer/early fall, so we’ll have even more color in the gym very soon! Keep training, monkeys…
